Abstract

This research aims to study the object (direct object) in both Arabic and Indonesian, focusing on the similarities and differences between the two languages, describing the methods used, and contributing to addressing the challenges and errors faced by Indonesian speakers learning Arabic, particularly regarding understanding and using the object. The research limits its comparison to Modern Standard Arabic and formal Indonesian regarding the object, adopting a descriptive analytical and comparative approach. This analysis relies on three main steps: first, linguistic description of the object in each language; second, identifying similarities and differences; third, predicting the potential challenges that may arise from these differences. The research yielded several key findings, most notably that both languages share certain similarities, as the object is considered an additional element in each language and can be multiple and positioned later in the sentence. However, significant differences were observed: Arabic may contain verbs requiring three objects, while in Indonesian, the objects are limited to a maximum of two. Additionally, the object in Arabic is identified through case markers, whereas in Indonesian, it is recognized by its position in the sentence. Arabic also allows for three different object placements, while Indonesian has a fixed order. It was found that these differences constitute major challenges for Indonesian learners of Arabic.
